Barbara Clapp Character Award

1996

This fund was established to honor Barbara Clapp for the years she served as secretary to the superintendents of Johnston County Schools. Dr. and Mrs. Tom Houlihan provided the funding. The selection process is incorporated into the existing writing curriculum, and asks fifth grade teachers to allow their students to write in connection with a prompt provided by the Education Foundation.

An award of $50 will be made to the top two students and their teachers.  

Central Johnston Rotary Creative Project Grants

Funded by the Rotary Club of Central Johnston County, these grants are chosen during the Creative Project Grant cycle. These grants are open to all teachers who are eligible for Creative Project Grants.

 Creative Project Grants

1991

The first program implemented by the Johnston County Education Foundation was Creative Project Grants. These grants are currently available to educators in Johnston County’s public schools twice each school year.

  • Maximum award amount per application is $500
  •  Judges are "blind" to applicants' names and schools
  • Awards based on creativity, ability for the project to continue after funds are depleted, potential to motivate students in their studies, cost-effectiveness, curriculum driven, and methods used for evaluation of goals attained
  • Workshops are held by request to help teachers hone their application skills
  • Those who do not win are encouraged to call the office to learn how to improve their applications.

Tom I. Davis, Jr. Leadership Award

2001

The Tom I. Davis, Jr. Leadership Award was established by Jimmy & Earlene Hite to encourage leadership at all levels in the Johnston  County Schools and in recognition of the outstanding leadership Tom I. Davis, Jr. provided to the Johnston County School System.

Cash awards, each up to $500, will be awarded annually.  The award is to be used for professional development that will augment the recipient’s leadership abilities.  Any Johnston County Schools employee with a desire to further develop leadership may apply.  The recipient must work in the Johnston County Schools the following year or return the full award to the Johnston County Education Foundation.

All leadership opportunities that are educational will be considered for funding.:

Interested JCS employees should email Lorine Davis (lorinedavis@JCEDFoundation.org) to obtain an application form.  Along with the application form, applicants are required to provide a letter from current supervisors and a letter of up to two pages which details:

·        Past and current leadership experiences

·        How this award will help the applicant meet leadership goals

·        How and where the funds will be used

·        The educational/professional benefits to the applicant

·        Why the applicant deserves the award

 Johnston Ed Foundation Development Award

1996

The Johnston County Chambers of Commerce administers the Flame for Learning Award for the Johnston County teacher of the year. We applaud their thorough efforts in selecting the teacher of the year, and add to their prize list the Johnston Ed Foundation Development Award of $500 to be used by the winning teacher for curriculum enrichment, certificate renewal, or educational travel.

 J. Burke Long Kenly Kiwanis Grants

Funded by the Kenly Kiwanis Club, these grants are chosen during the fall Creative Project Grant cycle or the Special Focus Grant cycle. These grants are open to teachers who teach at Glendale-Kenly Elementary School, North Johnston Middle School, or North Johnston High School.

 Ray Boyette Art and Choral Music Grants

1992

The second program implemented by the Johnston County Education Foundation was Ray Boyette Visual Arts Creative Grants. This project has been funded as a memorial by the Ray Boyette family through 2006. In 1997, the board of directors voted to expand the audience to include the choral music teachers.

  • Open to choral music and visual arts teachers in Johnston County’s public schools
  • Applications are distributed in the spring of each year
  • Up to $1,000.00 will be awarded to teachers before June, with the intentions that the supplies are ordered early, and projects are carried out the following school year.

 Special Focus Grants

1993

Special Focus Grants were driven by a need to fund larger projects, with the hopes that the funds would benefit larger groups of students.

  • Maximum award per application is $1500.00
  • Judges are "blind" to the applicants’ names & schools
  • Awards are based on the focus on student achievement, measurable results, school-wide creative programs, community & home involvement, ability to continue after the SF Grant is exhausted, and interdisciplinary subject matter.

 

WIZ KIDs Grant

2003

This fund was established in memory of Debbie Wyzykowski by her husband and supported by family members and friends. The grant will be administered through the Education Foundation's Creative Project Grants program and limited to projects which focus on children with special needs. Requests from South Campus Community School will be given priority over all other requests. The annual grant amount will be $100 or the annual interest, whichever is higher.
